Winter Driving Tips for Delhi–NCR Fog: Lights, Tyres and Braking Distance

Using Lights Safely in Delhi–NCR Fog

In fog, high beam actually makes visibility worse because the light reflects off water droplets and comes back as glare, reducing how far you can see. The safest setup in dense Delhi fog is to drive with low-beam headlights on, plus front and rear fog lights if your car has them, so you can see the road and other drivers can see you without blinding them. Keep your windscreen, windows, and headlamps clean, and use the front defogger and rear defogger to prevent misting that further reduces visibility.

Tyre Pressure, Tread Depth and Braking Distance

Cold air can reduce tyre pressure, and underinflated tyres increase braking distances and reduce grip on wet, cold roads. Check and maintain pressure at or just slightly below manufacturer recommendations in winter (never overinflate), and ensure tread depth is healthy so tyres can disperse water and maintain contact with the road. Worn tyres combined with fog, wet patches, and emergency braking is a major reason why pile‑ups and rear‑end collisions increase during North Indian winter fog.

Safe Following Distance and Braking Technique in Fog

Because visibility is low and road surfaces can be damp and cold, braking distances in fog are significantly longer than in clear, dry conditions. Drivers should slow down enough that they can comfortably stop within the distance they can actually see, and maintain a much larger gap to the vehicle ahead than usual—often 3–4 seconds or more, depending on conditions. Avoid sudden braking or lane changes; instead, brake gently and progressively so the car behind has time to react and ABS (if equipped) can work effectively on slippery surfaces.

Typical Problem in Delhi–NCR Fog

Many drivers enter dense fog on the Delhi–NCR ring roads or expressways with high beam on, worn tyres, and poorly adjusted or weak headlamps. In low visibility, they can’t see far enough to react, and the car itself lacks grip and balance for emergency braking. This combination greatly increases the risk of losing control, skidding, or rear‑ending another vehicle in a chain collision.

Simple Service Fix You Car

  • Headlight and fog light check + aiming/adjustment
  • Tyre inspection for tread and pressure, rotation if needed
  • Brake inspection (pads, discs, brake fluid level) This small preventive package makes a big difference in how the car behaves in fog, and ensures all visibility and stopping systems are working at their best.
